Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art through her aunt Denise. Her aunt was an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages by means of artwork. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her childhood, but she would spend every summer with her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the home and looking through the trash belonging to one of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to change to the public relations industry. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. The year 1999 was the time she established her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
